Meet Aparna (the musician).
In the spaces between words, sounds, and cultures, Aparna carves a path that is uniquely hers yet universally resonant. An Indian-American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and storyteller, her music fuses East and West blurring the boundaries of genre, language, and identity. Growing up straddling two worlds, she was equally immersed in the ornamented textures of Indian classical traditions and the vibrant pulse of Western pop and soul. Her compositions reflect this duality, capturing the essence of liminality—of belonging everywhere and nowhere, of finding beauty in the in-between.

Aparna’s musical journey is both eclectic and expansive. A true multi-instrumentalist, she plays tabla, dholak, drums, harmonium, tanpura, and guitar. The guitar, in particular, has become her most constant companion—portable enough to travel with her across five continents, a vessel through which her voice and spirit meet the world. Whether paired with the meditative drone of a tanpura or the earthy rhythm of percussion, her songs are grounded in tradition yet unafraid of reinvention.
Her sound imagines new realities. In English, her writing channels warmth, intimacy, and a soulful lyricism that speaks to the heart. In Hindi, her songs carry the timeless cadence of old Bollywood, the yearning of Sufi devotion, and the subtle grace of semi-classical Hindustani music. Her original compositions intertwine these influences, layering the spiritual depth of South Asian traditions with the melodic accessibility of Western pop—creating music that feels both rooted and boundless.
The journey has taken her to stages as diverse as Porch Fest and Sofar Sounds in Washington, DC; the Rift Valley Music Festival in Kenya; a Battle of the Bands in Paris; Soul Kitchens in Berlin; the Nirmal Bharat Yatra across India; dance productions in Oxford; and numerous weddings. She has busked on the streets of London, Berlin, Portland, Oxford, and New York—finding as much meaning in fleeting moments with passersby as in festival fields. Each performance, no matter the scale, is an invitation to share space and connect through music across borders.
Now, Aparna is shaping her first full-length album, an exploration of personal and collective stories told through melody and rhythm. She is eager to connect with collaborators, listeners, and supporters. Please do get in touch!
